I attended my first meeting of the committee last night.Milt Jeffries was there, so was Roy Crabtree and Jerry Kersey.Pete Torres sister, Emily Dawson, was there, too. There were also several other people, some older, some younger, and it seemed like a good cross-section of classes. The next meeting will be September 24th at 6:30 in the library. Please come.
They are expecting 500 to 1000 people for the celebration and have been working on preparation for several months.I guess the current high school students are really looking forward to this, too.
Saturday, October 13th is going to be the big day.It is also the night of the homecoming game.
The event will kick off with an alumni parade. If you are interested in walking in this, running, driving your fancy sports car, or even creating a float, just call 530-633-4090 for entry info. The classes of 1972 and 1957 already have floats planned.
From 11:00 to 3:00 there will be a REUNION ON THE QUAD and the WHS student body will be selling OLD YEARBOOKS.The cost of each has not been decided. They have from 3 to10 or so excess yearbooks from each class.
Tables will be set up around the quad area by decades.(The quad is the area beside the gym and it now has concrete and places to sit.)Classes are planning to have sign-in sheets, where is so-and-so? boards, memorabilia displays, and plenty of visiting at this time. You are welcome to put a little memory board together or bring your old scrap books to share. Also, bring the family photos and maybe pictures of your grand kids, too. This will be a good time to connect with people from other classes, former teachers, school staff, and coaches, too. Food will be for sale at this time.
A volleyball game (Wheatland vs. East Nicolas) is scheduled for noon in the gym.It will be a tribute to long-time volleyball coach Mary Ann Harrison.(I think she was a 1967 graduate of Yuba College.)
The homecoming game begins at 3:30.(Wheatland vs. Las Plumas)
This will start with a pre-game show honoring past alumni, including some of the oldest WHS graduates.(If you are interested in marching or riding in this, call the high school at 530-633-3100.)The show will march around the football field and, of course, have the crowning of the homecoming king and queen.
Roy Crabtree has worked very hard on this and a committee is putting together a celebration memory book which lists all of the graduates throughout the years. This will be available to all for a small donation cost.
This sounds like a fantastic event. It's a giant school reunion.
