Does anyone remember which class you were in when the word came down that JFK had been assassinated? How did you learn about it?

I was in Mr. Hoopers English class and heard it over the intercom.

Our Bear River 6th grade class was at recess.  They called us in early - and I remember the grumbling because our recess was cut short.  They assembled us in class and told us the news.  At the next recess, I remember one girl who was laughing because she hated Kennedy.  That has stuck in my mind all these years.

I was in Mr. Trousdale's 3rd period French class.  They put the radio news over the intercom at about 10:50 am.  I remember the time because the intercom speaker was right next to the clock on the wall.  Walter Cronkite was the radio announcer, and at the point when they turned on the radio, the story was just that the president had been shot  --  not killed.  Cronkite reported something about the stock market, and I remember thinking that it must not be too serious, if they would mention something as trivial as the stock market.  It wasn't 30 seconds later that Cronkite announced JFK's death.  We were stunned.  Mr. Trousdale was a good adult to be with at that moment, because he was calm and very sad.  It really was a seminal moment for people of our generation, wasn't it?

I was in Mr. Brumley's class and we were sent to the cafeteria at some point and I remember talking to a kid named Ted - can't remember his last name - and he was saying how he would never forget this day because it was his birthday.  Whenever that thought passes through my mind, it's all in black & white.  Strange times.

I was in PE class.  It was my first day at WUHS and I didn't know a soul.  I can remember it like yesterday - Never heard that locker room quite that quiet again.

It was during a gym class basketball game & the loudspeaker came on & Mrs Robinson had us all be quiet & sit down.  Jackie Kenney was my role model so I spent the next few days glued to the tv.

I was in the middle of a geometry test in Mr. Hughes class.  When the PA came on, the news caster was talking about Dallas and the things going on there.  We all just kinda looking at each other, wondering what was going on. When he announced that the President had been shot, everyone froze in place. I remember thinking it could not be fatal and since he had gone to the hospital, the Dr.s would be able to treat him.
As a side note, my brother, Trent and ( I think ) Bob Farney cut school that day and heard the news on the car radio while getting ready to go in the Airman's Club at Beale. When they went in and made the announcement, they almost got beat up by a bunch of guys in the club who thought that was the most tasteless prank they had ever heard.  Someone turned on the news, and the atmosphere dramatically changed.

I was in Mr. Hooper's English class. I distinctly remember him pulling a handkerchief from his pocket and sobbing into it when the PA announced the President's death. It was a very sad day, indeed.
